Next Class:

Why Membership is Valued at Grace Place

America has been called a nation of strangers.  As a result, we're experiencing an epidemic of loneliness.  A Gallop poll reported that four out of ten Americans admit to frequent feelings of intense loneliness.  In contrast, when the New Testament writers look for a metaphor to sum up the nature of the church, they choose an image of community.  Church membership provides the opportunity to belong and contribute to a community of believers.  Grace Place extends the invitation to membership with the hope it will be a gateway into an ongoing community of fellowship for you.

Grace Place values local church membership and the commitment it represents.  The Bible actually infers two kinds of members.  At the instant of the decision to believe in Jesus and Lord and Savior, we become positional members in the universal church of Jesus Christ, based solely on grace alone, through faith alone, based on the perfect life, atoning death and victorious resurrection of Jesus Christ alone – plus nothing.  If you are a Christ-follower, then you are already this kind of member (1 Corinthians 12:12, 13; Ephesians 2:13-22; 4:3-6; Colossians 1:13-22).  However, the Bible also assumes those positional members become involved and committed in the participation of a local church (Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:25-31; Hebrews 10:24, 25; 1 Timothy 3:14, 15).

Is membership biblical?  Why should I join?  What's in it for me…what's in it for the church?  Do I have to become a member?  What if I disagree with something?  The questions may seem endless concerning this concept of membership with Grace Place.  This class is designed to help answer your questions, but in the event you have additional questions that are not addressed, please know we appreciate them and encourage you to speak with any one of our pastors who are more than willing to help you find the information you are seeking.

At the conclusion of this class, you will have the opportunity to sign a personal response that indicates agreement with Grace Place's philosophy, vision and basic beliefs and your commitment to membership.  While you are always welcome to fellowship and actively participate at Grace Place, membership is required for all who hold leadership positions.  Our members make explicit their commitment to Jesus Christ and this local church including; attending weekly worship services, regular financial giving, committing to a small group where you can connect and grow relationally and joining the scores of those who serve as volunteers in a wide variety of ministries and activities.

It is our sincere hope that your interest in being a member at Grace Place will be affirmed through the information offered here.  Membership is an important step; we are here for you each step of the way.

What Membership Says

Membership says, "I belong here."  In turn God says that believers belong together (Hebrews 10:23-25).  If you sense that God wants you here at Grace Place at this time in your life, and you want to make a public declaration that you are committed to God's work through this church, membership is the next step.

Membership says, "We share the same ministry goals."  God says that believers are to be committed to one another in a community for the sake of spiritual impact (Ephesians 4:6).  If you believe that Jesus has a work to do through Grace Place and you are willing to commit with others to see that it gets done, membership is the next step.

Membership says, "I accept that I am a part of community within the family of God."  God wants you to belong (Galatians 6:1,2,10).  If you want to be part of a caring network of people, sharing one another's joys and sorrows, helping one another grow, being comforted and strengthened, membership is the next step.

Membership says, "I am accountable to the local community of faith for my walk with God."  God warns against spiritual autonomy (Matthew 18:15-20).  If you don't want to be alone in your stand for Jesus Christ, and want to receive the guidance, equipping, and teaching necessary to stay on target, membership is the next step.

Membership says, "I will submit to the leadership God has placed over me."  God directs, that is the correct thing to do (Hebrews 13:17; 1 Corinthians 16:15,16).  If you want to join with the Grace Place leadership in the building up of this local church, membership is the next step.
